Dr. Bonnie Dempsey grew up in South Carolina and received her B.A. in Art from Columbia College. Her lifelong dreams were to be either a cartoonist for Walt Disney or a photographer for National Geographic. Since those things didn’t work out, she moved to Atlanta and took a job as an Audiology Assistant. At that point she re-evaluated her goals and found she loved the idea of helping people hear. After a year working in Atlanta she went on to the University of South Carolina for her Master’s degree in Audiology. She received her doctorate five years ago. She began her career in Audiology diagnosing hearing loss in special needs children. Over the last 30+ years she has been in many specialty areas of Audiology. She has worked as a clinical Audiologist for Ear, Nose and Throat physicians, owned an Industrial Audiology company and been a consultant in many other areas. She has attended countless training programs over the years to stay current with the newest technology and fitting protocols. She opened Carolina Audiology in 2001 and has two offices: one in Lexington, SC and one in Orangeburg, SC.
I have done many things over the last 30 years. Although I always enjoyed what I was doing at the time, I always wanted to be in private practice. Working in a busy Ear, Nose and Throat physician’s office, I never felt that I had the time to adequately talk with my patients after the testing was finished. I felt that they needed more explanation than I could give them in the allotted time. I felt that there was an emotional component to telling someone that they had a hearing loss that required more counseling than I had time to give and that they deserved. My answer to this dilemma was to open my own office where I could schedule patients with more attention toward their needs.
Carolina Audiology has now been open for 15 years. I believe that my original concerns were correct. I am now able to spend the time I need with each of my patients. There are many facets to buying and wearing a hearing aid. Patients deserve to have their questions answered until they are comfortable with this new device in their lives. And they need to know that their Audiologist is available to them for any issues that may arise. To that end, I have tried to construct my practice to the needs of my patients as the main priority. The most rewarding aspect of Audiology is seeing the difference that amplification can make in someone’s life. Patients that have been opposed to even trying a hearing aid are so often overwhelmed by how much better life is with sound and conversation. It gives the patient an opportunity to be a participant in their life rather than sitting in the shadows because it is just too much work and trouble to hear. I offer a variety of brands, styles and price ranges of hearing aids to provide the most appropriate help for my patients. They can choose from different technology levels to suit their lifestyles and my prices are often thousands of dollars less than my competitors.
The hearing aids of today are very intelligent and manufacturers are working hard to develop new and added features that could only be dreamed of a few years ago. Today hearing aids can be controlled by your cell phone. You can plug a device into the back of your television that will stream the sound directly to your hearing aids. They are very close to having instruments that can monitor your blood pressure, take your blood sugar readings, measure your pace and distance as a runner, determine if you have fallen and alert a phone number, measure your heart rate and oxygen saturation and also help you hear much better. You need only to imagine it and someone is probably working on it today. The things that are coming are truly amazing.
I love what I do and the population that I work with. My goal is to make your day better through better communication with your family and friends. If you have questions or concerns, schedule an appointment to come in and talk. An initial evaluation only takes an hour and includes a thorough hearing evaluation, a detailed explanation of the results and a complete discussion of your options. Schedule an appointment at your convenience by calling one of the above numbers in Lexington, SC or Orangeburg, SC. I will be so happy to meet you.
